Large field for cycling series
The opening round of the Trust House North Island men’s team road cycling series has attracted a large field, with riders from all over the lower North Island coming to the Wairarapa to take part. The first race of the five-race series is being held this Sunday, 22nd September and features an 80km race around Lake Wairarapa near Featherston.
A total of 205 riders representing 22 teams will take part in the only team’s series held for master’s riders in New Zealand (age 35 years plus).
With five races in the greater Wairarapa between September and November, master riders will get a taste of high level competitive ‘teams’ racing only seen in large domestic tour events like the international New Zealand Cycle Classic.
The Team Series will give riders of all ages the chance to experience riding with support vehicles and a race convoy in a professionally run series. With different grades to suit all masters’ levels, the series offers a challenge to all competitive cyclists. Whether they are a top master rider, veteran competitor or just a keen weekend warrior there is a grade for anyone to have a go.
Included in the field are winners of the 2018 series including Masters One champion Brendan McGrath (Fit Lab); Masters Two champion Mathew Stevens (this year riding for a new BDO team) and Masters Three champion Ian Paintin (Kiwivelo) .
Race director Jorge Sandoval is looking forward to the series and thanks sponsors Trust House and Wizwireless for their generous support. Trust House has been a long supporter of cycling in New Zealand, sponsoring the international Men’s Cycle Classic each year. He also predicts there will be some exciting racing for spectators.
“After last year’s series, I received positive feedback from many riders who enjoyed the format of having master’s riders in three different age groups. It seems this is the best option to encourage them all to take part and give them the opportunity to compete against other same age riders,” says Jorge.
“On Sunday, riders will contest the road race completing an 80km lap starting and finishing in Featherston via Lake Wairarapa and Martinborough. It will be a challenging course and I’ve seen several teams out in the past few weeks training, which is a good signal.”
Allan Pollard, Trust House’s Chief Executive is excited about being a major supporter of this event, which brings highly competitive road cycling to the Wairarapa.
“This series offers an opportunity to show off the Wairarapa and arguably some of the finest road cycling courses in New Zealand,” says Mr Pollard.
With five races being throughout across the Wairarapa between September and November, master’s riders of all abilities will get a taste of high level competitive ‘teams’ racing.
